NFPA 36 provides requirements for fire-safe design and operation of solvent extraction plants, facilities that use hydrocarbon solvents to extract oils from agricultural commodities such as oil-bearing seeds. Provisions address:

  • The extraction process and facility
  • Storage and handling of the solvent
  • Operations involved in preparing raw material (meal) for processing
  • Means for conveying the oil and processed solids from the extraction facility

Requirements also cover conducting repairs when extraction equipment is operating and when it is shut down and purged of hydrocarbon vapors. This up-to-date edition expands rules concerning allowable conditions for hot work repair, with particular attention to meal preparation and meal finishing equipment; plus includes more detailed equipment design requirements with emphasis on flame arrestors.
