Many HVAC applications require fan speeds that are different from motor speeds. Belt drives remain a common solution. However, in spite of their successful history, there is a lack of belt-drive efficiency data. ASHRAE Research Project 1769, “Experimental Evaluation of the Efficiency of Belt Drives for Fans,” has recently been completed, having tested over 100 fan-belt-drive combinations. Test methods and mathematical efficiency models are presented. Variable frequency direct-drives (VFDs) are an alternative. However, they not only introduce VFD losses, but also impact motor efficiency. Concepts of induction motors, pulse width modulation power, and overall system efficiency determination methods are presented.
