About This Item
Full Description
The difficulties of ascertaining satisfactory performance for staircase pressurization systems have caused a review of the rationale of the subject, using a practical fire scenario approach, in relation to other smoke management techniques and fire safety provisions. Openable windows/panels are advocated as an essential means of fire venting and exhaust for pressurization air. An alternative of pressurization of the gap/clearance between the staircase/lobby door panel and the frame, coupled with staircase purging fans if necessary, is proposed for future research as a possible substitute for staircase pressurization if such is required. Fresh air connecting devices are proposed to boost fresh air into the staircases by means of variable speed/pitch portable fans yet to be developed, in order to complement the fail-safe design for safe staircases. Other features for smoke control are also proposed.
