Full Description

This report presents detailed results of tests carried out on 5 styles of gaskets whose properties cover the broad range of gaskets available commercially. Three types of tests have been performed, namely: (a) mechanical (stress-deflection, and creep); (b) Leakage tests on a hydraulic test rig; and (c) Leakage tests on a bolted-up rig. Tests (a) and (b) were conducted in the laboratory affiliated with the first two authors while tests (c) were performed in the laboratory affiliated with the third author. The test procedure was defined on the basis of extensive gasket tests carried out under the auspices of the Pressure Vessel Research Committee and under the direction of its Sub-committee on Bolted Flanged Connections through its Task Group on Gasket Testing.

The results show that there is generally good correlation between the three types of tests. Of particular interest is the correlation between the three types of tests. Of particular interest is the correlation between tests (b) and (c) at the stress levels that were in the range of capacity of the bolted up rig. Higher gasket stress levels could be generated on the hydraulic rig and indicate the need for testing at high as well as low gasket stress for a comprehensive evaluation of gasket performance. A graphical method is proposed for characterizing gasket behavior and determining ASME Code type gasket factors in terms of any required tightness level. A corresponding numerical procedure is currently being developed.

The present test procedure, with few modifications, appears to be adequate for production tests on commercial gaskets.

The Report also presents selected Milestone Gasket Test Program results which pertain to four other styles of gaskets. These results are given in the same units and formats and are therefore directly comparable with some of the current data. A total of 9 gasket styles are thus covered in this Report.
