Standard for Safety of Household and Similar Electrical Appliances, Part 2: Particular Requirements for Shavers, Hair Clippers, and Similar Appliances

UL 60335-2-8

1 Scope

This clause of part 1 is replaced by:This standard deals with the safety of electric shavers, hair clippers and similar appliances intended for household and similar purposes, their RATED VOLTAGE being not more than 250 V.NOTE 1

Examples of similar appliances are motor-operated appliances used for manicure, pedicure and similar purposes.

Appliances not intended for normal household use, but which nevertheless may be a source of danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used by laymen in shops and on farms, are within the scope of this standard.NOTE 2

Examples of such appliances are appliances for hairdressers and hair clippers for animal shearing or clipping.

So far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by appliances which are encountered by all persons in and around the home.This standard does not in general take into account:

- the use of appliances by young children or infirm persons without supervision;

- playing with the appliance by young children.

NOTES

3 Attention is drawn to the fact that:

- for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, additional requirements may be necessary;

- for appliances intended to be used in tropical countries, special requirements may be necessary;

- in many countries additional requirements are specified by national health authorities, national authorities responsible for the protection of labour and similar authorities.

4 This standard does not apply to:

- appliances intended to be used in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of a corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour or gas);

- rechargeable battery-powered shavers ( IEC 335-2-19);

- massage appliances ( IEC 335-2-32);

- appliances for medical purposes ( IEC 601).

1 Replacement of the first paragraph under Note 1 in the part 2 with the following:

These requirements do not cover manicure, pedicure, or personal grooming appliances used for similar purposes. However, hair clipping and shaving appliances supplied with manicure, pedicure, or other similar attachments or accessories are investigated under these requirements and such additional requirements as are applicable to the appliance under consideration.

1 Deletion in Note 4 of the part 2:

Delete the second dash under Note 4 in the part 2.

1 Modification of 1DV of the UL part 1:

The articulate probe in Figure 1DV shall be used for these products.

1 Addition of 1.101dv.1 to 1.101dv.8 to the part 2:

1.101DV.1 These requirements cover hair clippers and shaving appliances to be employed in accordance with the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70.

1.101DV.2 These requirements cover appliances for household or commercial use on persons or animals, and appliances in which motion of an operating part is produced by electrical means.

1.101DV.3 An appliance that utilizes some other source of energy - such as gas or steam - in addition to electric energy is investigated under these requirements and under such additional requirements as are applicable to the appliance under consideration.

1.101DV.4 Motor-operated lather makers, lather makers incorporating heaters, barber shop vacuum cleaners for use on persons, and other types of hair clipping and shaving appliances not specifically named here are investigated under these requirements and under such additional requirements as are applicable to the appliance under consideration.

1.101DV.5 A product that contains features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems new or different from those covered by the requirements in this standard, and that involves a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons shall be evaluated using the appropriate additional component and end-product to determine that the level of safety as originally anticipated by the intent of this standard is maintained. A product whose features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems conflict with specific requirements or provisions of this standard shall not be judged to comply with this standard. Where appropriate, revision of requirements shall be proposed and adopted in conformance with the methods employed for development, revision, and implementation of this standard.

1.101DV.6 This Standard does not include additional requirements applicable to equipment designed for use in hazardous locations as defined in the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70.

1.101DV.7 The values given in SI (metric) units are the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.

1.101DV.8 These deviations are based on the:

a) Second edition of UL 60335-1, and

b) the Fourth edition of IEC 60335-2-8.
