THEREFORE, CERAMICS HAD TO BE POLISHED FOR THEIR USE IN TRIBOLOGICAL SYSTEMS. AT THE INSTITUT FUR WERKZEUGMASCHINEN UND FERTIGUNGSTECHNIK (IWF) OF THE TECHNISCHE UNIVERSITAT BRAUNSCHWEIG, FUNDAMENTAL TESTS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT IN HONING OF CERAMIC MATERIALS. IN THESE TESTS, THE INFLUENCE OF THE GRAIN SIZE ON THE WORKPIECE ROUGHNESS AND THE STOCK REMOVAL WAS INVESTIGATED. IN THIS PAPER, EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS ARE PRESENTED FOR ALUMINA AND SILICON CARBIDE. SEM MICROPHOTOS OF THESE MATERIALS ILLUSTRATE THE DIFFERENT MECHANISMS IN CHIP FORMATION DEPENDING ON THE GRAIN SIZE. FINALLY, THE PROCESS OF HONING HYBRID COMPONENT PARTS (GRAY CAST IRON AND ALUMINA) IS PRESENTED.
