Full Description

Fiber optics is one of the most important assets of a service provider. Most, if not all, of its revenue passes through different types of fibers in different types of networks, such as long haul, metropolitan or enterprise. Protecting this investment is key to the service providers and private networks.

Cables are responsible for keeping the fibers from harmful agents such as humidity, mechanical stresses and chemicals. Well-designed and installed cables can maintain fibers operating properly for 20 years or more. In order to reach users the cables must pass through the most inhospitable environments, such as cold and humid undergrounds, hot and dry deserts, below rivers and oceans, high-voltage power lines, etc.

Because of that, cables, the same way as fibers, must comply with specific applications, which can push their components to their limits. The purpose of this document is to characterize application environments and cable types, and provide guidance on which cable types should be used in which environments.
