The Division of Conservation Research and Technology ofthe Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) awarded Heat Transfer Research, Inc. (HTRI) a contract to prepare a comprehensive state-of-the-art report on the prediction of flow-induced tube vibration in shell-and-tube heat exchangers (1) and to conduct a workshop on the subject to identify areas where additional research is needed. Aworking copy of the state-of-the-art report was issued to all attending the workshop to provide background information and to act as a starting point for discussion. The Heat Exchanger Tube Vibration Workshop was held October 27 and 28, 1976, in Pasadena, California.

The first day was a closed session for the fourteen invited panel members to discuss among themselves their understanding of and concerns about the flow-induced vibration problems. The second day was an open session at which nearly eighty attendees listened to presentations by the members of the panel and entered into lively discussions. This paper briefly reviews the problem, discusses flow-induced vibration phenomena, summarizes the activities of the workshop, and presents the recommendations from the workshop for future research.
