1. Scope

1.1

This Standard gives definitions, classifications, and a method for determining specific energy consumption for self- contained and remotely located refrigerated display cabinets.

1.2

This Standard applies to commercial refrigerated display cabinets that are intended for displaying and merchandising (a) food products and other perishable merchandise (eg, cut flowers) in retail stores and supermarkets; (b) food products or prepared or semiprepared food in the retailing operations of food service establishments; (c) ice for human consumption; and (d) food products for immediate consumption (eg, packaged sandwiches, fresh fruits, salads, etc).

This Standard applies to (a) manufacturers' standard catalogue type equipment including all commercial refrigerated display cabinets regardless of their shape, size, or configuration provided that the cabinets are equipped, or designed to work, with electrically driven, mechanical, vapour-compression type systems charged with one of the re frigerants listed in Group A1 of CSA Standard CAN/CSA- B52; (b) display cabinets of both the unitary, self-contained type and those that are designed to work with remotely located condensing units; (c) both open and closed refrigerated cabinets, provided that the door(s) of the closed cabinets are made of glass or other s ee-through material, and that the closed cabinets are designed for displaying and merchandising and not for storage; (d) both service type and self-service type display cabinets; and (e) both permanently connected and cord-connected equipment.

This Standard does not apply to (a) refrigerated cabinets that are designed to form the front wall of a refrigerated storage room and where the air space of the cabinet is not separated from the air space of the storage room; (b) mitred transitional cabinet fillers used as corner sections between two refrigerated cabinets of identical cross section; (c) commercial refrigerators and freezers that are used for the storage of food products; (d) refrigerated vending machines; (e) the rating and testing of refrigeration components and component assemblies such as compressors, condensing units, evaporators, etc; and (f) special, custom-designed refrigerated display cabinets, manufactured as a special order for one customer only.

Customization in appearance, which does not affect the performance of the cabinet, does not constitute custom design for the purposes of this Standard.

This Standard is not intended to be used for the enforcement of energy use ratings in retail stores and supermarkets.
