About This Item

Full Description

1. Scope

1.1 This Standard covers mechanical couplings used to axially join pipes and fittings in nonpressure drain, waste, and vent (DWV) and sewer systems inside and outside buildings, above ground, and buried underground. Note: Caution should be used when installing mechanical couplings at low temperatures. The coupling manufacturer should be consulted.

1.2 This Standard includes requirements for mechanical couplings of the following types: Type 1 - Couplings used primarily to join pipes of the same material. The couplings incorporate a centre stop and may have a shear ring. Type 2 - Couplings used primarily in material transitions. A centre stop is optional. Also included are repair couplings used to join pipes of the same size and material. The pipes and fittings to be joined are of similar or dissimilar materials, sizes, or both. Note: Pipe and pipe-fitting materials that may be joined include (a) asbestos cement (CSA Standards B127.1 and B127.2); (b) cast iron (CSA Standard B70 and ASTM Standards A 48 and A 888); (c) concrete (CSA Standard A257 and ASTM Standard C 14); (d) copper (ASTM Standard B 306); (e) ABS (CSA Standards B181.1 and B182.1 and ASTM Standards D 2661 and F 628); (f) PVC (CSA Standards B181.2, B182.1, and B182.2 and ASTM Standards D 2665 and F 891); (g) galvanized steel (ASTM Standard A 53); and (h) vitrified clay (CSA Standards A60.1 and A60.3 and ASTM Standard C 700).

1.3 The joining of pipes and fittings with bell and spigot ends that utilize an elastomeric gasket seal is not covered by this Standard.

1.4 This Standard is not intended to restrict the use of alternative materials or methods provided they meet the intent of this Standard.

1.5 The values given in SI (metric) are the standard. The values in parentheses are for information only.
