Full Description

CSA Preface

This is the second edition of CSA ISO 17225-1, Solid biofuels — Fuel specifications and classes — Part 1: General requirements, which is an adoption without modification of the identically titled ISO (International Organization for Standardization) Standard 17225-1 (second edition, 2021-06). It supersedes the previous edition, published in 2015 as CSA ISO 17225-1 (adopted ISO 17225-1:2014). For brevity, this Standard will be referred to as "CSA ISO 17225-1" throughout. The main changes since the previous edition are as follows: • particle size distribution for wood chips and hog fuel has been updated; and • Table 15 for undensified thermally treated biomass has been deleted. This Standard is one of a series of Standards developed by ISO/TC 238 on Solid Biofuels that are being adopted by CSA Group under the series Solid biofuels — Fuel specifications and classes, which consists of the following: a) ISO 17225-1, Part 1: General requirements; b) ISO 17225-2, Part 2: Graded wood pellets; c) ISO 17225-3, Part 3: Graded wood briquettes; d) ISO 17225-4, Part 4: Graded wood chips; e) ISO 17225-5, Part 5: Graded firewood; f) ISO 17225-6, Part 6: Graded non-woody pellets; and g) ISO 17225-7, Part 7: Graded non-woody briquettes. This Standard was reviewed for Canadian adoption by the CSA Technical Committee on Solid Biofuels, under the jurisdiction of the CSA Strategic Steering Committee on Fuel Burning Equipment, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group.

Scope

This document determines the fuel quality classes and specifications for solid biofuels of raw and processed materials originating from a) forestry and arboriculture; b) agriculture and horticulture; c) aquaculture. Chemically treated material may not include halogenated organic compounds or heavy metals at levels higher than those in typical virgin material values (see Annex B) or higher than typical values of the country of origin. NOTE Raw and processed material includes woody, herbaceous, fruit, aquatic biomass and biodegradable waste originating from above sectors.
