Full Description

1. Scope

CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 231.0-M89 - Electrical and Electronic Measuring and Test Equipment

1.1.1

This Standard applies to electrical, electronic, or electromechanical equipment designed to

(a) measure or observe, and indicate quantities of

(i) electrical, or

(ii) electronic phenomena; or

(b) supply

(i) electrical, or

(ii) electronic quantities for measuring or indicating purposes, or

(c) measure or indicate electrical analogues of non-electrical phenomena.

1.1.2

Constraints This Standard applies to equipment intended for installation and use in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, that

(a) is rated for connection to supply circuits which exceed extra-low voltage and not power limited in accordance with Clause 14 and which do not exceed nominally:

(i) 600 V, 3 phase, between phases for 3 phase supply circuits; or

(ii) 250 V rms, single-phase, or dc;

(b) is rated for connection to an extra-low voltage or power limited circuit and internally derives from that circuit a voltage or power in excess of those limitations according to Clause 14;

(c) is rated for measuring, testing, or otherwise connecting to circuits operating in excess of extra-low voltage, or not power limited in accordance with Clause 14; or

(d) is rated for connection to, or utilizing, extra-low voltage or power limited circuits.

Additional Canadian Electrical Code, Part II Standard requirements shall apply to equipment for use in hazardous locations.

Some requirements of this Standard do not apply to extra-low voltage and/or power limited circuits.

1.1.3

Auxiliary or Accessory Equipment This Standard also applies to auxiliary equipment and accessories rated for use with electrical, electronic, or electromechanical equipment where auxiliary and accessory equipment is separate equipment which does not itself perform the desired function but is used in addition to or as a supplement to equipment according to Clause 1.1.1.

1.1.4

Equipment Covered This Standard forms one of a series of specific parts.

The General Requirements set forth in this Standard apply to all electrical and electronic equipment or accessories in relation to Clauses 1.1.1 and 1.1.3.

Requirements that apply specifically to certain types or classes of electrical and electronic equipment are set forth in the CSA Standard CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 231.1, Test Probes.

In the event of conflict between the general requirements of this Standard and another standard in this series, the requirements of the specific standard (ie, CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 231.1) relative to a certain type or class of equipment, shall apply.

1.1.5

Equipment Not Covered These requirements do not apply to the following types of equipment:

(a) medical laboratory and industrial process control equipment;

(b) watt-hour meters and associated equipment installed by electric utility companies for measuring electrical energy and related quantities;

(c) general use battery chargers, auxiliary supply sources, substitute power supplies, or laboratory-type power supplies not specifically rated for use with measuring or testing equipment.

Specifically rated is defined as being (i) packaged with the equipment; (ii) referenced in an equipment marking; or (iii) referenced in the operating instructions packed with the equipment.

1.1.6

Environmental Conditions Equipment according to this Standard is intended for use in enclosed locations where the air temperature is controlled and normally only nonconductive pollution occurs.

The basic climatic conditions for heated or cooled enclosed lacations are (IEC Publication 654-1, Class B location) (a) temperature from 5?C to 40?C; equipment may occasionally be subj ected to temperatures between -10?C and -5?C for short time periods; (b) altitude up to 2200 m; (c) relative humidity up to 85%, with wet bulb temperature not to exceed 27?C.

1.1.7

Equipment with Telecommunication Features Equipment intended to be connected to a telecommunication network shall comply with the requirements of CSA Standard C22.2 No. 0.7, Equipment Electrically Connected to a Telecommunication Network. /

CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 231.1-M89 - Test Probes

1.1

This Standard applies to probes and probe assemblies for use with electrical, electronic, and electromechanical measuring and testing equipment covered by CSA Standard C22.2 No. 231.0.

1.2

Measuring or Testing Probe Assemblies

1.2.1

Measuring or Testing Probe Assembly A measuring or testing probe assembly for connection to a live circuit according to Clause 9.2 of CSA Standard C22.2 No. 231.0 shall be marked, constructed, and tested according to the applicable requirements of this Standard.

1.2.2

Constraints This Standard applies to measuring or testing probe assemblies that are intended for measuring or testing (a) branch circuits up to 1000 V; or (b) ac or dc voltages up to 40 kV incorporated within electrical end-product equipment circuits.

1.2.3

Items Not Covered This Standard does not apply to measuring or testing probe assemblies that are (a) intended for use with equipment other than that according to the scope of CSA Standard C22.2 No. 231.0; (b) intended for use exclusively in extra-low voltage and power limited applications (see Clause 14 of CSA Standard C22.2 No. 231.0); and (c) intended primarily for equipment-to-equipment interconnection (for example, IEEE interface bus).
