Full Description

Solid phase micro-extraction (SPME) is a relatively new organic extraction technique that offers considerable advantages over traditional procedures like closed-loop stripping (CLS) or liquid-liquid extraction or purge/trap. One application of SPME is in the determination of taste and odor compounds methyl isoborneol (MIB) and geosmin. It still is able to meet the requirement of high sensitivity, linearity and robustness of traditional techniques, while taking considerably less time and using smaller samples. It was orginally suggested by the Des Moines Water Works for taste and odor analysis a few years ago but sensitivity at the time was inadequate to meet required levels. This paper describes our experience in bringing the method on line and presents the results of comparison analysis with CLS. Includes 3 references, figures.
