Full Description

The City of Glendale is located in southern Arizona within the Greater Phoenix Metropolitan area, approximately ten miles west of downtown Phoenix, Arizona. Glendale is Arizona's fourth largest community and like many communities in Arizona and the southwest United States, continues to experience tremendous growth. Glendale's projected 2020 population of 260,000 people represents a significant increase over its year 1990 U.S. Census estimate of 148,000 people (Community Sciences Corporation, 2002 and Maricopa Association of Governments, 2003). With this growth and concerns over water availability in Arizona, Glendale continues to plan and implement water, wastewater, and reclaimed projects to meet the needs of its population. This paper describes a recent planning effort for recycling reclaimed wastewater in the western portion of Glendale's service area. The paper discusses historical wastewater planning, previous strategic planning for reuse, the geographic location of the study area, the existing water recycling facilities in the area, effluent availability and flow projections, water quality considerations, and future end use options. Includes 18 references, tables, figures.
