About This Item

Full Description

Three methods of chemical spill control were investigated: granular activated carbon (GAC) filter adsorbers, GAC post-filter adsorbers, and powdered activated carbon (PAC) addition to an upflow, solids contact clarifier (using Infilco Degremont's Superpulsator). The synthetic organic chemical selected for use in the simulated spill was 1,2-dichloropropane (1,2-DCP). The process train included preozonation, clarification using the Superpulsator, filtration using three filter designs, and post-filtration GAC adsorption. Computer models were used to predict the attenuation of 1,2-DCP and compare that with actual results. Experimental methods and results are discussed. Cost of filter- adsorbers and post-filter adsorbers are compared.
