About This Item

Full Description

Historically, large diameter aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) wells have been constructed utilizing heavy walled steel pipe as the final casing. Because of the brackish nature of an ASR storage zone the life of the well is reduced and the water quality near the well can be altered. Large diameter polyvinyl chloride (PVC) well casings, such as Certa-Lok, have been used in ASR and Reverse Osmosis well construction because they are nonferrous. Certa-Lok well casing also provides good sealing characteristics and a locking system that can handle the vertical weight. However, all PVC products are effected by the heat of hydration during cementing operations and Certa-Lok is currently limited to a maximum outside diameter of 17.4 inches. With these limitations, any alternative well casing materials and designs were investigated. A large diameter fiberglass pipe (FRP) with double O-ring seals and a positive locking system was determined to be a good solution to this problem. The FRP was successfully installed in two wells in Florida and based on the lessons learned and experience gained; it is an optimal choice in brackish or corrosive environments. Includes abstract only.
