Full Description

An all-variable speed chiller plant was selected for commissioning to improve system overall energy efficiency. It is a primary-secondary water-cooled chiller plant. There are three different-sized chillers and a two-cell cooling tower in this chiller plant. Seven-month trend data including chilled water, condensing water supply/return temperature and flow rates, pump speeds, outdoor conditions and power consumption of major components, were collected through building management system. The overall average chiller plant efficiency is 0.975kW/ton over the period of collected data. Various trend data analyses such as chilled water temperature reset, chiller sequences, and system oscillation, were conducted to detect commissioning opportunities for this plant. An energy simulation model was developed to simulate the existing chiller plant based on design submittals and operation control sequences, and was calibrated using trend data. The model was then used to evaluate control operational strategies for improving chiller plant efficiency in this study.
