View Sample Alloy Digest Data Sheet (PDF)

Since 1952, Alloy Digest has been the leading reference for materials property data on metals and alloys used throughout the world. Featuring graphs, charts and tables, these sheets give facts and figures on composition or characterization, physical and mechanical properties, heat treatment, and machinability.

SAE 1016 is a low-carbon steel combining good machinability, good workability and good weldability. It is used for components case-hardened by carburizing. It is also used in the hot-rolled, annealed, normalized or cold-worked condition for a variety of construction and engineering applications. SAE 1016 has a relatively high manganese content (0.60-0.90%) for a low-carbon steel; this provides increased hardenability which is reflected in all uses and gives increased hardness and strength in the core of carburized parts and in uncarburized applications.
