The objectives and the scope of work for this project were as follows: to characterize the types of bacteria affecting the water quality in the treatment plant and its distribution system; to determine the level of chemical nutrients, in the form of Assimilable Organic Carbon (AOC), nitrogen, and phosphorous, that may be supporting biofilm formation throughout the distribution system; to determine the source(s) of contamination in the Union Water System; and, to review, design, and implement a long-term disinfection program (chloramination) in order to minimize the frequency that pollution indicator bacteria exceed the Provincial regulations. In order to meet the objectives of this project, a multiphase approach was required. This investigation encompassed both the water treatment plant and the distribution system. Gathered analytical and base map information was derived from electronic and hard copy formats to be entered into the e:DATTM GIS system. The GIS base map is comprised of 1:50000 NTDB topographic data (UTM Zone 17 NAD83) and used in conjunction with historical hard copy drafting plans of each municipal water supply. In order to accomplish such a large project, the IT group met with the engineers and scientists to define the tasks that would be utilized in the various phases of the investigation. As those set tasks were completed (e.g. manually locating all the green houses in the four surrounding municipalities) that information was then added to the e:DATTM GIS project for further investigations. As sampling continued within the project and entered into the database management system, the ability to use the database query engine within e:DATTM further allowed the IT group and engineers to accurately target problematic areas.
