Full Description

This paper discusses four examples of different concepts of integrated runnoff management in Berlin, Germany. The Cultural Center UFA-Fabrik in Berlin-Tempelhof integrates the water of green and conventional roofs together with the runoff of the streets and stores it in a former underground waterworks station. The Institute of Physics of the Humboldt University in Berlin-Adlershof features a combination of storm water management with energy saving by combining natural cooling from green façades with technical adiabatic cooling systems. The DaimlerChrysler Area at the Potsdamer Platz, Berlin implemented the following techniques for the management of 23.000 m3 of rainwater which fall annually on this complex of 19 buildings: extensive and intensive green roofs; collection of roof-runoff for toilet flushing and plant irrigation; and, an artificial lake for rainwater retention and evaporation. Finally, the Housing Development at Belßstreet/ Ldeckestreet includes a system to collect and treat rainwater from the public rainwater sewer. Includes 4 references, tables.
