The majority of supermarkets around the world do not use carbon dioxide, but the transition from HFCs is gathering pace. The movement away from CFCs and HCFC refrigerants has caused manufacturers to look for alternative refrigerants. Continued development of products and system design for transcritical plants make CO₂ an increasingly attractive option and may become the norm for European supermarkets within five years, with North America not far behind.
