About This Item

Full Description

This popular set of course notes has been entirely updated based on the 2008 Masonry Standards Joint Committee (MSJC) Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures (TMS 402/ACI 530/ASCE 5) and Specification for Masonry Structures (TMS 602/ACI 530.1/ASCE 6). Masonry Course Notes, distributed on CD-ROM, was originally developed for use in ArE 345, a semester-long, combined undergraduate and graduate course in masonry engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. Topics covered include the history of masonry; the design and specification of masonry construction requiring little structural calculation; and the design of masonry requiring more structural calculation. Structural calculations are based on the 2008 Masonry Standards Joint Committee Code and Specification, the 2009 International Building Code, and ASCE 7-05. The notes include the complete design of a low-rise masonry building for gravity and wind load, and the preliminary design of a high-rise masonry building for gravity and seismic load. Strength and allowable-stress design approaches are covered. The notes have been reorganized to separate strength design from allowable-stress design (facilitating their use in quarter courses), and new material on anchorage design has been added. These class notes comprise 29 lectures in PDF format. They include spreadsheets for automated calculation of moment - axial force interaction diagrams for masonry elements, and also sample homework and exam problems. The notes are intended primarily for use in an undergraduate or graduate course in masonry as part of a civil engineering or architectural engineering curriculum. Selected parts can also be used in architecture or construction courses.
