THIS PAPER DESCRIBES THE INTELLIGENT KINEMATIC ENGINE (IKE) WHICH PROVIDES AN INTELLIGENT INTERFACE BETWEEN THE PART DESIGN DATA AND MANUFACTURING PROCESS. THE TWO PRIMARY FOCUSES OF THIS PAPER ARE: THE REAL TIME PERFORMANCE CAPABILITIES ACHIEVED THROUGH PARALLEL PROCESSING AND THE ABILITY TO PERFORM AUTOMATED TRAJECTORY PLANNING FORM INSPECTION DATA OR CAD DATA. THE ADVANTAGES AND PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH IMPLEMENTING PARALLEL PROCESSING AS WELL AS FINE GRAIN VERSUS COARSE GRAIN SOFTWARE DESIGN ISSUES ARE DISCUSSED.
