Full Description

This report presents the results of an ASHRAE-sponsored project, RP-733. It has been an effort to provide validation of the ice-on-pipe thermal storage system algorithms developed under ASHRAE research project RP-459.

Five tasks have been defined for this project:

Task 1: Review and evaluate the data from the ORNL experimental study to define a plan for validation of the RP-459 direct expansion ice-on-coil and ice storage tank algorithms.

Task 2: Develop a component/system model, based on the RP-459 algorithms, as implemented in the ICICLE program, to provide output that can be directly compared with the experimental data obtained from the ice-on-pipe system configuration and components tested at ORNL.

Task 3: Compare results of the RP-459 algorithm-based simulations with the experimental data collected in the ORNL tests.

Task 4: Analyze the results of the simulation/ORNL test data comparison and identify the causes of any differences between the measured and simulated results.

Task 5: Recommend improvements to the algorithms and the structure of the simulation model to improve their predictive capability.
