This report describes the work performed under ASHRAE Research Project 642-RP "Knowledge-Based System for HVAC System Type Selection". The research project was monitored by TC 1.5, Computer Applications. The objective of this project was to develop a knowledge-based system that will select a heating, ventilating, and air conditioning system type and components for small office buildings in two climatic regions: cold and hot/humid. The knowledge acquisition for the expert system was accomplished by personal interviews with experts, literature reviews, and case studies. The acquired knowledge was structured, organized, and encoded into the program. The program was developed using an expert system, shell and then validated by ASHRAE members.
