About This Item

Full Description

A chilled water system was installed in 1981 to connect all of the buildings on a university campus. The piping is unique in that all of the chilled water transport system is composed of fiberglass pipe. By utilizing the existing chillers in these buildings, the engineer was able to design a system with the advantages of a central chiller system and without many of the disadvantages. The system was designed to pay for itself in energy savings, and the engineer was able to achieve this goal by specifying fiberglass pipe for the chilled water transport system. The low installed cost and high estimated yearly pumping energy savings for fiberglass pipe were the major reasons for the selection of this material.

This system has given excellent performance for seven years, and two additions have been made to the system since it was put into operation.
