Traditional raised floor cooling is not designed to adequately cool the high heat densities now being seen in many data centers. There are certain baseline measures that can be taken to optimize the functioning of the traditional cooling system. However, adding cooling solutions specifically designed for high heat density is often the most efficient solution to cool the hot racks and zones that occur in high density environments and generate a sizable amount of heat.

This paper presents the baseline measures that can be taken to optimize the traditional cooling and it provides an overview and the pros and cons of cooling fluids and system architectures for high heat density cooling. The paper also provides information to guide decisions about the most appropriate cooling technologies for particular data center applications.
