Developed by NIOSH, NPPTL, and NFPA, NFPA 1984 specifies respiratory protection for wildland fire fighting operations.

Now in its second edition, NFPA 1984: Standard on Respirators for Wildland Fire Fighting Operations provides comprehensive respiratory protection requirements to safeguard wildland fire fighting personnel from inhalation hazards. It specifies respirator requirements for use in non-IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health) wildland environments.

Wildland fire fighters frequently encounter lengthy exposures during fire fighting operations, and use of SCBA is limited due to the duration of the breathing air supply. The NFPA® Technical Committee on Respiratory Protection Equipment worked closely with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the National Personal Protection Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) in developing the necessary protection needed for wildland fire fighting environments.

The 2016 NFPA 1984 has the latest comprehensive requirements for:
  • Certification of such respirators
  • Packaging, labeling, and user information required to be provided by the respirator manufacturer to the purchasers
  • Design requirements
  • Performance requirements
  • Testing methods to verify the pass or fail of air purifying respirators (APR) and powered air purifying respirators (PAPR)
