Verify that fire inspectors and plan examiners meet current industry recognized levels of professionalism as specified in the 2014 NFPA 1031.

Fire prevention and life safety depend on thorough, accurate fire inspection of occupancies and review of architectural plans and shop drawings -- including an understanding of current codes and regulations so compliance can be evaluated. The 2014 edition of NFPA 1031: Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Inspector and Plan Examiner identifies the job requirements and requisite knowledge and skills needed to perform the challenging tasks in today's complex built environment.

Requirements in NFPA 1031 apply to:
  • Three professional levels of performance required for fire inspector
  • Two levels for plan examiners
Make sure personnel are qualified to ensure that buildings meet code and provide adequate life safety protection.

With updates and upgrades to life safety codes and regulations, the fire inspector and plan examiner must be up-to-date and versed in new technology, codes, and regulations to be able to ensure that proper life safety measures have been incorporated into the project. Whether your department, agency, or organization trains, certifies, or supervises fire inspectors and/or plan inspectors, this document is essential for safeguarding lives.
