Full Description

In this paper, an approach of modeling parallel fan-powered terminal units (FPTUs) with inherent primary air leakge is proposed and implamented using Energy Management System (EMS) in EnergyPlus. A series of building energy simulations were conducted on a prototype medium office building model at four air leakage levels under five different U.S. climates. Simulation results from this study reavealed that the primary air leakage increases the energy consumption of central cooling coil, central supply fan, and FPTU supplemental heating throughout all the climates with more energy consumption at a higher leakage level. It is also concluded that compared with series FPTUs, the energy savings potential of parallel units significantly decreases as air leakage level increases.
