People have known for ages that liquids boil ...the acquaintance with this phenomenon being probably as old as their discovery of fire. As this boiling process has been subject to formal investigation, the complexities of the boiling mechanisms have unfolded. The treatise in 1756 by Johann Gottlob Leidenfrost on the phenomena observed when small drops of liquid are placed or spilled on a very hot surface is often cited as the first substantial study of boiling heat transfer.(1) Few significant works followed until 1934 when Shiro Nukiyama published a paper presenting his experimental results which displayed three distinct boiling regions. (2) Since then the boiling phenomena has received considerable attention; the impetus for the increased effort coming from modern developments in technology.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of inclination on the heat transfer for saturated film pool boiling from a flat plate heater. Nitrogen at atmospheric pressure was used as the test fluid. The electrically heated plate was oriented at angles of 0, 30, 60, and 90 deg from the horizontal with the heated surface facing up. Heat fluxes and film coefficients were determined over a plate temperature range of 100 to 800 F.
