Full Description

Heat exchangers with extended surfaces are used extensively as both evaporators and condensers tional in conven- air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment. In addition, flat-finned cooling coils are employed in air-conditioning and dehumidifying equipment. These coils reduce the amount of moisture in the air by cooling it to a temperature below which the water vapor starts to condense out of the air. While techniques exist for the design of coils used merely to cool or warm a gas without dehumidification, the design of dehumidifying coils is usually based on empirical adjustments to the results for dry coils. Experimental data for five plate-finned heat exchangers operating under dry as well as humidifying con- ditions have been obtained by McQuiston.1 Based upon these data, generalized correlations to predict heat transfer and friction factors under dry tube conditions have been developed. These agree with the results of earlier investigators and predict data fairly well. Modified correlations applicable to dehumidifying coils have also been provided.
