About This Item

Full Description

This new chapter lays out how practicing engineers andarchitects can use their best professional judgment to mitigate the environmentalimpact of the buildings and systems they design and adapt them to a changingclimate. This content builds upon and complements existing ASHRAE guidance onminimizing the environmental impact of buildings and their systems. Forexample, ASHRAE publishes whole-building energy and water efficiency standardslike Standard 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-RiseResidential Buildings, as well as guidance on reducing the greenhouse gas (GHG)emissions of HVAC&R systems through improved efficiency and phasing outrefrigerants with high global warming potential (GWP) and ozone-depletingpotential. Other related work concerns the impacts of flooding and otherextreme weather events on the ability of buildings to preserve human life andmaintain acceptable indoor environmental quality (IEQ). A core theme of thischapter, therefore, is that while there are trade-offs between mitigation andadaptation, both are required.
