On the basis of observation of various kinds of atria for long time and the results of organised research in several atria for the past six years, offers relevant design criteria for orientation, the building envelope, HVAC systems, avoidance of stratification of air, indoor air quality, acoustics and general considerations of design, especially regarding the use of an atrium as a return air plenum and for its function as part of the total building performance and relation to surrounding spaces.
