An electroplating facility at Amberley in Queensland, Australia, was recently refurbished. The projects included the installation of push-pull ventilation systems on 56 tanks. Because the design of these ventilation systems was critical to the safety of plating shop personnel and significant in determining both the initial and operating costs of the project, a prototype was used to arrive at design parameters rather than rely on existing texts and design data. Deals with the planning and construction of the prototype and details of how it was tested, modified, and retested to provide the basis for design of a ventilation system that would achieve optimum performance for the application. Discusses the assumptions made in the design of the system and further testing after completion of the project to confirm acceptability of the plating shop environment and to test these assumptions.
