This paper describes the fire and life safety systems that were incorporated as a part of Water Tower Place in Chicago, a building with space devoted to large and small retail functions, as well as residential and hotel purposes.

The fire protection and life safety systems were planned to accomplish the following,goals:

• Life safety for all occupants
• Functional continuity for the respective building uses
• Equivalent compliance with applicable codes (City ofChicago Building Code)
• Cost effectiveness
