Full Description

The Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Procedure of ASHRAE Standard 62.1 has been used much less frequently than the Ventilation Rate Procedure. Therefore, it is advantageous to provide information to building owners and engineers about current applications of the IAQ Procedure. One school district took the initiative to apply the IAQ Procedure in a high school wing which had experienced problems related to air handler operation and IAQ. Contaminant modeling was performed to determine if a reduced design ventilation rate would be acceptable with enhanced air cleaning. The simulation results showed contaminant concentrations below the target concentration limits. After installing enhanced air cleaning and setting outdoor air amounts to a minimum level, the school district took indoor air quality measurements and kept a complaint log for the spaces served. The results were favorable to the school district in showing that contaminants were controlled and that air quality complaints stopped.
