CSA Preface

This is the first edition of CAN/CSA-ISO 5349-2, Mechanical vibration - Measurement and evaluation of human exposure to hand-transmitted vibration - Part 2: Practical guidance for measurement at the workplace, which is an adoption without modification of the identically titled ISO (International Organization for Standardization) Standard 5349-2 (first edition, 2001-08-01), including Amendment 1:2015.

For brevity, this Standard will be referred to as "CAN/CSA-ISO 5349-2" throughout.

This Standard is part of the series of CSA Group Standards on Occupational Hearing Conservation. This series is divided into the following Standards, with additional Standards to be added as they are developed:

a) CSA Z1007-16, Hearing loss prevention program (HLPP) management;

b) CSA Z107.56-13, Measurement of noise exposure;

c) CSA Z107.58-15, Noise emission declarations for machinery;

d) CSA Z107.6-16, Audiometric testing for use in hearing loss prevention programs;

e) CSA Z94.2-14, Hearing protection devices - Performance, selection, care, and use;

f) CAN/CSA-ISO 5349-1:16, Mechanical vibration - Measurement and evaluation of human exposure to hand-transmitted vibration - Part 1: General requirements; and

g) CAN/CSA-ISO 10819:16, Mechanical vibration and shock - Hand-arm vibration - Measurement and evaluation of the vibration transmissibility of gloves at the palm of the hand.

Adoption of this ISO Standard related to mechanical vibration, along with Standards such as ISO 5349-1 and ISO 10819, will provide awareness on hand-transmitted vibration and improve the occupational safety of workers across North America.

Scope

This part of ISO 5349 provides guidelines for the measurement and evaluation of hand-transmitted vibration at the workplace in accordance with ISO 5349-1.

This part of ISO 5349 describes the precautions to be taken to make representative vibration measurements and to determine the daily exposure time for each operation in order to calculate the 8-h energy-equivalent vibration total value (daily vibration exposure). This part of ISO 5349 provides a means to determine the relevant operations which should be taken into account when determining the vibration exposure.

This part of ISO 5349 applies to all situations where people are exposed to vibration transmitted to the hand-arm system by hand-held or hand-guided machinery, vibrating workpieces, or controls of mobile or fixed machinery.
