Preface:

This is the second edition of CSA Standard CANKSA-E60335-2-54, Safety of household and similar electrical appliances — Part 2: Particular requirements for surface-cleaning appliances employing liquids, which is an adoption, with Canadian deviations, of the identically titled CEVIEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) Standard 335-2-54 (second edition, 199506), including Amendment 1 :1999, currently available from IEC in English only. It supersedes the previous edition, published in 1994 as CANKSA-E335-2-54 (adopted CEVIEC 335-2-54: 1988).

This Standard was reviewed for Canadian adoption by the CSA Technical Committee on International Standards under the jurisdiction of the Strategic Resource Group, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. A list of the members of the Technical Committee is available upon request. This Standard has been approved as a National Standard of Canada by the Standards Council of Canada.

Scope:

NOTE: Appliances may incorporate heating elements or means for pressuring the liquid container.

So far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by appliances which are encountered by all persons in and around the home.

  • the use of appliances by young children or infirm persons without supervision
  • playing with the appliance by young children.
NOTE: Attention is drawn to the fact that
  • for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, additional requirements may be necessary
  • for appliances intended to be used in tropical countries, special requirements may be necessary
  • in many countries additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, the national authorities responsible for the protection of labour, and similar authorities.
This Standard does not apply to
  • floor treatment and wet scrubbing machines (IEC 335-2-10)
  • cleaning appliances which are permanently fixed to a building;
  • cleaning appliances operating with a pressure exceeding 2.5 MPa or with a liquid temperature exceeding 80°C
