Introduction

There are a number of special industrial radiographic test methods that are not as well known as the conventional direct-film methods commonly used. Their advantage over conventional radiography appears to be in the evaluation of specific discontinuities, and that they may apply to specific applications or materials. In general, these special methods can be separated into two groups: those that use film as a recording medium and those that do not. Those methods that do not use film are often referred to as filmless radiography.

Examination by fluoroscopic methods and neutron radiography are the most widely used of these test methods. There are however a number of other lesser know radiographic test systems and procedures which are used in special applications.

There is a rapid development of new radiographic test methods and constant modification of present methods. It is the personal responsibility of the certified radiographers to keep abreast of these developments even though they may not be directly involved with a particular test method or its applications.
