About This Item

Full Description

This method rates textile materials for thermal resistance and insulation when exposed to a convective energy level of 83 2 kW/m2 for a short duration.

It is applicable to woven fabrics, knit fabrics, battings, and nonwoven fabrics intended for use as a clothing for protection against a chance, short exposure to open flames. It is not intended for evaluating materials exposed to other thermal exposure such as radiant energy or molten metal splash.

Procedures are provided for testing single layer or multiple layer specimens, either in contact with the sensor or with an air space between specimen and sensor.

This method is not applicable to textile materials that undergo complete flaming combustion when tested vertically for flame resistance.

The testing and evaluation of a product against this method may require the use of materials and/or equipment that could be hazardous. This document does not purport to address all the safety aspects associated with its use. Anyone using this method has the responsibility to consult the appropriate authorities and to establish appropriate health and safety practices in conjunction with any applicable regulatory requirements prior to its use.
