About This Item

Full Description

This paper presents a case history of an actual 24-story, 265,000 ft2 (24,619 m2) office building in San Francisco, California, that has installed a thermal storage system using ice. Reasons are presented why the first cost of the ice-thermal storage system was less than a system that would have used a conventional centrifugal cooling plant. The paper shows the specific selection of compressor and storage size, the refrigerating circuit design, the ice-builder storage system details, and the water and refrigerant flow diagrams. The cost impact and benefits to the structural, electrical, and architectural portions of the project are discussed as well as the effect on the mechanical design and construction.
