About This Item

Full Description

1.1 These test methods cover a procedure to measure a carbon black property called the Compressed Volume Index. This index is the ratio (x100) of two void volumes, the void volume of a sample of a candidate carbon black divided by the void volume of a Standard Reference Black, SRB B5. The void volume is obtained by measuring the compressed volume of a weighted sample contained in a cylindrical chamber when a specified compression force is applied by a movable piston with a displacement transducer on the piston mechanism.

1.2 The compressed volume index is an important carbon black property that relates to the compounded physical properties for carbon black-filled elastomers.

1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.

1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
