Describes an investigation of the dynamic latent heat storage effects of building construction and furnishings to assess the impact of this on electrical energy required to remove the absorbed moisture via air conditioning. Describes an environmental chamber developed to subject nine construction materials to cyclical step changes of relative humidity at constant temperature. Uses a model to evaluate the impact that night time ventilation/free cooling can have on air conditioning and electrical demands. The initial results indicate that moisture storage acts to increase cooling loads and cooling energy. Concludes that ultimately, the knowledge gained will help to hold energy costs to a minimum where air conditioning is an integral part of the building design.
