Presents the results of a study of the effect of shading devices on annual heating, cooling and total energy use, peak electric demand and energy cost savings in single family residences, a small office, a school and a high-rise office in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Using a building energy analysis model, savings were simulated for interior and exterior shading devices. Finds that while the best-performing devices have annual cooling energy savings ranging to 30%, the annual energy cost savings go up to only 4% for the residence, 5% for the small office and less than 1% for the school. Summer peak electric demand reductions are 18% for the residence, 11% for the small office and 3% for the school.
