Describes an award-winning energy conservation project for a 18,580m2 (200,000ft2) supermarket in Oklahoma. The design team set the objectives of phaseout of ozone depleting refrigerants, reducing refrigerant charges, reducing refrigerant leakage, recovering refrigeration waste heat, transferring heat/cool between department store/grocery sections, maintaining humidity levels, and increased ventilation. All practical alternatives had to be considered and evaluated, design had to be applicable to most climates, no experimental technology was considered and the system had to be cost effective. Deals with monitoring of system performance and the innovation details introduced. Concludes that the rigorous monitoring and analysis has provided system designers with valuable information about load interactions and usage profiles which will be used in future commercial settings.
