This article describes a study conducted by the authors designed to examine the relationship between concentrations of Giardia cysts, Cryptosporidium oocysts, and other microbial, water quality, and meteorological parameters in a surface water used as a potable water supply. Extensive sampling was conducted in 1996 at one location on the Delaware River at Trenton, N.J. Sampling was performed under a variety of meteorological conditions to determine whether changes in such conditions resulted in changes in the concentrations of any of the water-related parameters, including Giardia cysts, Cryptosporidium oocysts, and other microorganisms of fecal origin. Seventy-two parasite samples were collected. During parasite sampling, additional grab samples were gathered to measure concentrations of other microorganisms of fecal origin.
