About This Item

Full Description

Elevated temperature piping failures have prompted the need for NDE of piping systems in service. The results of the NDE often dictate repair by welding. Since little has been documented on the metallurgical integrity of weld repair, this study was undertaken under a grant from the Welding Research Council.

In this study of Cr-Mo repair welding, the most widely used process, Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), was employed to repair 2 ¼Cr-1Mo hot reheat piping which had been used at 1050°F at a pressure of 395-475 psi for 185,000 hours, and 1 ¼Cr-½Mo hot reheat piping with an operating temperature of 1005°F, pressure of 630 psi and 138,000 hours of service. Repair welds were made in the longitudinal weld seam, base metal and Fully Reheat Treated (FRHT) base metal.
