These requirements cover battery-operated flashlights and lanterns for use in hazardous (classified) locations, Class I, Division 1, Groups C and D, in accordance with the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70.

These requirements also cover electrical equipment for use in Class I, Zone 1, Groups IIA and IIB hazardous (classified) locations.

These requirements apply to complete products with self-contained batteries, and include products consisting of a battery pack assembly and light assembly with interconnecting flexible cord.

These requirements cover flashlights and lanterns that employ batteries and miniature lamp bulbs with lamp assemblies so constructed that when the glass bulb or envelope surrounding the lamp filament is broken, the lamp bulb is immediately and reliably disconnected from the circuit to prevent ignition of specified surrounding flammable gas- or vapor-air atmospheres.

These requirements do not cover flashlights and lanterns of the explosion-proof type or other type of construction providing protection against ignition of flammable gas- or vapor-air atmospheres. Flashlights and lanterns that are intrinsically safe are covered by the Standard for Intrinsically Safe Apparatus and Associated Apparatus for Use in Class I, II, and III, Division 1, Hazardous (Classified) Locations, UL 913.

A product that contains features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems new or different from those in use when the Standard was developed, and that involves a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons, shall be evaluated using the appropriate additional component and end-product requirements as determined necessary to mai ntain the level of safety for the user of the product as originally anticipated by the intent of this Standard.
