The economical air conditioning of large volume industrial areas will most likely be accomplished with spot cooling of individual worker stations or zone cooling of occupied space only. In either situation, ventilating jets, projected more or less horizontally, would probably be subjected to cross-flow. Such cross-flow may occur naturally as in the case of a thermal plume above a machine or an oven or may be caused by mechanically induced drafts of various origins.

A very brief background of the general problem treated here has been given in a previous paper presented at this symposium. The present paper deals with the effects of cross-flow on the behavior of a horizontally-projected chilled ventilation jet. The approach here is entirely analytic. However, the relations developed can be reduced to the simple case of a horizontallyprojected chilled jet in a quiescent environment. This was done and the predictions compared with the experimental results reported by Nottage (1).
